Betsy Humphreys Becomes NLM Deputy Director

Citing her “comprehensive knowledge of NLM’s Programs” and “exceptional qualifications,” National Library of Medicine Director Donald A.B. Lindberg announced the appointment, in February, of Betsy L. Humphreys as Deputy Director of NLM. A member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, since 1999 she has led the NLM’s largest division, Library Operations, as Associate Director for Library Operations.

Since joining the NLM in 1973, Ms. Humphreys has served in increasingly responsible managerial positions, including Deputy Associate Director for Library Operations, for 15 years, and as Assistant Director for Health Services Research Information since 1986. A BA graduate in history at Smith College, she earned her master’s degree in library science from the University of Maryland.
