Participating in Clinical Trials, a new health topic developed by the National Library of Medicine (NLM) and the National Institute on Aging (NIA), describes the benefits and risks of clinical trials, and explains how they contribute to medical research. Basic terms are defined as well as the types and phases of trials, the informed consent process and built-in safeguards for trial participants. The site is the latest addition to NIHSeniorHealth, which targets the health interests of older adults.
“Older adults who log on to this site will find information to help them make informed decisions, including questions to ask and what to look for if they are thinking of joining a trial,” said NLM Director Donald A.B. Lindberg, MD.
Information about federal and privately supported clinical trials conducted in the U.S. and around the world is available at ClinicalTrials.gov.
