Gale Dutcher Named NLM Deputy Associate Director, SIS

In August, Gale Dutcher was appointed NLM Deputy Associate Director, Division of Specialized Information Services, succeeding Jeanne Goshorn and Florence Chang, who had served as Acting Deputy Associate Directors after Marti Szczur retired.

Dutcher came to NLM as a Library Associate Fellow in 1978, and has since served in the Cataloging Section, the Collection Access Section, and as a systems librarian on the project team that developed DOCLINE.

Since 1988, she has headed the SIS DIRLINE team, helped in NLM’s early efforts to provide AIDS information services, and collaborated with the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and the Food and Drug Administration to develop the AIDSTRIALS and AIDSDRUGS databases. As Chief of the Outreach and Special Populations Branch, she led in the Library’s information outreach to minority populations that included AIDSinfo, which NLM manages on behalf of the Department of Health and Human Services.

She has a bachelor’s degree in biology from Stony Brook University, an MS in zoology from the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, and an MLS from C.W. Post College, Long Island University.
