Martin Luther King, Jr., PhD, pastor, activist and prominent leader of the American civil rights movement, was born January 15, 1929. The poster, entitled Dare to dream, was printed for NIH’s 14th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Program. It features designer Alfred Laoang’s illustration of King’s profile looming large in the sky as people march on the ground below. With what look like abstract mountaintops in the background, this illustration brings to mind many of the themes and metaphors from King’s historic “I Have a Dream” speech, delivered in 1963 during the March on Washington. In tribute to King, a national holiday is observed each year in the United States, on the third Monday in January.
