Zika Virus: Fight the Bite

Lots of people are wondering what they can do to prevent Zika.

High school students can help.

Infectious disease expert Dr. Gavin Macgregor-Skinner presented “Zika Virus: Fight the Bite” to high school students participating in a distance learning program at NLM this spring.

Dr. Macgregor-Skinner urged students to “communicate, collaborate and connect” by using cellphone cameras and GPS features to report mosquito locations to local health departments. He also addressed how people can protect themselves and described the life cycles and characteristics of the two mosquito species associated with the disease’s transmission.

Taking time from his teaching at Harvard and Penn State, Dr. Macgregor-Skinner also discussed his efforts to combat the virus in Brazil by working with the Centers for Disease Control and the World Health Organization.
